About Waiwera CRG
We are looking for more volunteers to help improve emergency support in Waiwera.
Waiwera is a small community where most residents are within close walking distance from each other. This closeness is an advantage when there is a crisis or greater levels of need.
However, living in a small coastal area also comes with its challenges. With the risk of storms, slips and tsunami, we could easily become isolated in an emergency.
We formed Waiwera CRG to help our community be more prepared to deal with emergency situations, especially severe weather events and natural disasters.
We aim to:
- encourage every household to have a safety plan, including:
- a 'grab bag' for evacuation
- emergency supplies to last for 3-7 days at home
- identify evacuation routes to higher ground
- provide a community hub to offer shelter, first aid and help when needed
- encourage residents to connect with their neighbours.
We are working to achieve these goals through:
- a communications system including a 'phone tree A communication system used to quickly relay information by phone. Each person in the 'tree' calls others and so on, until everyone on the list is contacted.'
- sharing information from Auckland Emergency Management (AEM)
- community events and face-to-face conversations within the village.
Get involved
We invite all Waiwera residents to join us. Whether you have local knowledge, a bit of time or just a desire to help – there is a place for you. The more people we have, the stronger our response and recovery can be.
Let’s prepare together, so no one is left behind when it matters most.

What we need your help with
We need volunteers to help prepare our communities for emergency events by:
- identifying and minimising risks and hazards
- connecting our communities
- raising awareness of what to do in an emergency.
Volunteers can also get training in communications management and connecting people in need with those who can help them.
During an emergency
We are working to set up an emergency community hub for Waiwera on high ground.
We are also writing a communications plan and have an amateur radio operator who can work with Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (AREC) during an emergency.
We run our CRG alongside Waiwera Ratepayers and Residents Association. During an emergency event we will work with them to identify members of the community who:
- are vulnerable
- have special skills
- can provide shelter if needed
- have generators, solar power and other sources of power like electric vehicles.
